Global challenges for a sustainable society
This plenary session will present a global view on the core problems currently affecting the world, identifying the challenges for the construction of sustainable societies and the major initiatives that aim to overcome them. The objective is to present the dimension of the necessary changes and the sense of urgency regarding changes in the production and consumption patterns, with special focus on the issues related to climate changes, energy matrix, use of natural resources, ecosystems preservation, control of new disease vectors, hunger, poverty, extreme poverty and inequalities.

Plenary session 1

This plenary session will address, from a historical point of view, the possibilities and boundaries for the contributions of governmental, market and civil society organizations for the development of societies, especially regarding the development of ethical values, knowledge, regulatory systems, techniques and technologies that support the patterns of production, consumption and life in society. The objective is to establish the grounds for the discussion about the role of a socially responsible company in the construction of a sustainable society.

Roundtable 1

Deforestation of the Amazon - is it possible to avoid it?
This table will discuss if there is a possible balance between the development of activities with high impact on the forest (cattle raising, mining and agriculture) and the social and environmental development of the Amazon. The discussion between the macro economic and environmental policies will be conducted based on real experiences of businesspeople who face these dilemmas on a day-to-day basis.

Theme panel 1

Climate changes – Commitments of the socially responsible company
This panel will present the main indicators of the current climate change and discuss the commitments to emission reduction that the socially responsible company should make in order to create the necessary critical mass to revert this trend.

Theme panel 2

Valuing and promoting sustainable businesses
This panel will present and discuss the main mechanisms used by the market to value and promote sustainable businesses. The panel will discuss the advancements made in the social and environmental criteria used by investment funds, stock exchanges, commercial and development banks in the assessment of investments and company management.

Theme panel 3

Economic exploitation of biodiversity
This panel will address the opportunities of sustainable businesses enabled by biodiversity and the challenges and difficulties of this type of business. The discussion will focus on the analysis of what main issues should be contemplated in the market regulation and self-regulation concerning biodiversity products.

Theme panel 4

Waste Sustainable Management
This panel will present and discuss business initiatives for waste sustainable management. It will also discuss the role of socially responsible companies in strengthening public policies on waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

Workshop 1

Management of Sustainability Projects, Part 1
This workshop will provide the participants with an opportunity to revisit the existing relationship between strategies and projects, from the unified perspective of the PMBOK methodology (PMI - Project Management Institute©) and of sustainability tools (Ethos Indicators, Millennium Development Goals, GRI, etc). It is a workshop aimed at companies that have already decided to incorporate sustainability in their business strategy and that seek systemic implementation of this strategy in their organizational structure, operating policies and in the processes of the several value chains in which they participate.

Theme panel: ISO 26000 – Corporate Social Responsibility

For many specialists in the theme, the ISO´s Working Group, in charge of the preparation of the future standard, has become the major multi stakeholder global forum to discuss Social Responsibility. This panel will focus on the already approved issues of the future ISO 26000, and will debate the challenges and opportunities of this initiative, allowing conference participants to learn about it before its publication in 2008.

This plenary session will address the dilemmas faced by executives of companies that seek to integrate the requirements of sustainable production into the business objectives, and the satisfaction of society demands for the enhancement of the company’s social role. It will discuss the challenges of the innovative role that these companies need to play, and the conflicts resulting from the culture established in the company, market and society.

Eradication of Inequalities – The contribution of CSR
This roundtable will address how far CSR can go in relation to the strategy of social change, analyzing its contribution to the reduction of inequalities. It will also discuss the dilemmas faced when trying to align the business potential with the solution of social problems.

Theme panel 5

Business pact for integrity and fight against corruption
This panel will present the Business Pact for Integrity and fight against Corruption and the guidelines for its implementation by companies. The advancements made will also be discussed.

Theme panel 6

Sustainable business linkages in the production chains
Presentation and discussion of initiatives that strengthen the sustainable business linkages in the production chains among large, medium-sized and small companies. This panel will also discuss how these linkages can be made with solidary economy experiences.

Theme panel 7

Dissemination of best practices in the implementation of the decent work agenda.
This panel aims to review the challenge of disseminating best practices in the promotion of decent work. It will discuss the paths to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) guidelines implementation for multinational organizations, as well as the challenges to make advancements in the implementation of the Pact to combat Forced Labour.

Theme panel 8

Intersectorial cooperation for local development
This panel will present how companies can cooperate with other players for local development promotion. It will also discuss the mechanisms required to strengthen this cooperation in the light of successful experiences.

Management workshop 2 - Global Reporting Initiative (GRI 3)

This workshop will explain the main changes in the 3rd Generation of the GRI Sustainability Report model, as well as the challenges and opportunities in reporting using this tool.
