Adalberto Veríssimo

Senior researcher and one of the founders of Imazon – a civil society organization of public interest for research founded in 1990. Degree in Agronomic Engineering and post-graduate degree in Ecology from the Pennsylvania State University. Co-author of 15 books and over 80 scientific and technical papers in the areas of conservation, ecology, forest management and forest policy in the Amazon. AVINA leader since 2002.

Adriana Ramos

Degree in Social Communication. Coordinates the Amazon Initiative of the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA). Also a member of the Committee of the Small Grants Program of the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and of the International Advisory Group (IAG) of the Pilot Program for the Protection of Tropical Forests. Coordinates the Workgroup on Forests of the Brazilian Forum of NGOs and of the Social Movements for the Environment and Development.

Allen L. White

Vice president and senior fellow of Tellus Institute, Boston, USA, he directs the institute’s Program on Corporate Redesign. In 1997, he co-founded the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and served as CEO until 2002. In 2004, he co-founded and is director of Corporation 2020, an initiative focused on designing future corporations to embed social purpose at their core. Since 2005, he has served as senior advisor to Business for Social Responsibility (BSR).

Amit Goswami

World authority on studies seeking to reconcile science and spirituality, Goswami is a Ph.D. in quantum physics from Calcuta University, India, and professor emeritus in the Physics Department of the University of Oregon, USA. He has authored countless articles published in physics, economics and psychology magazines, and several books relating quantum physics to spirituality, such as Physics of the Soul, The Self-Aware Universe, Quantum Creativity, The Quantum Doctor, and The Visionary Window. Goswami has become globally known after stating his ideas in the 2005 movie “What the Bleep Do We Know?”.

Anna Pelliano

Sociologist with post-graduate degree in Social Policy from the University of Brasilia (UnB), has developed and published several papers on public policy assessment. Participated in the development of major programs against hunger and poverty. Currently, she coordinates the Social Responsibility Studies at the Applied Economics Research Institute (Ipea), where she has worked since 1975. Peliano’s most recent research includes a pioneer study in Brazil on the behavior of private companies in the social field.

Antonio Jacinto Matias

Holding a graduate degree in production engineering from the University of São Paulo Polytechnic School and a post-graduate degree in business administration from FGV-SP (Getúlio Vargas Foundation-São Paulo), Matias is senior vice-president of Banco Itaú, vice-president of Itaú Social Foundation, and executive-director of Itaú Cultural Institute. He is also executive-director of Febraban (Brazilian Federation of Bank Associations) and member of the Roberto Marinho Foundation Board of Trustees.

Artur Henrique da Silva Santos

Holding a degree in sociology from Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas, State of São Paulo, Santos is president of CUT (Unified Workers Confederation) and director of Sinergia (São Paulo State Energy Workers Union), which gathers workers of the electric power and piped natural gas sectors. He was president of the Electrical Workers Union in Campinas for two terms, Capacity Building secretary of the São Paulo section of CUT, national Organizational secretary of CUT and, later, its secretary-general.

Carlos Lopes

Development and strategic planning specialist, Dr. Lopes has several degrees from the Graduate Institute of Development Studies, University of Geneva, and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Paris 1, Pantheon-Sorbonne. He joined UNDP in 1988 as a development economist, was UNDP Resident Representative and UN System Representative in Brazil, and was UN Assistant Secretary General during Kofi Annan’s tenure. His achievements include the establishment of the National Institute for Studies and Research (INEP) in Guinea-Bissau, and reforming the UNDP technical cooperation system. Dr. Lopes has authored or edited several books, and taught at Universities in Lisbon, Coimbra, Zurich, Uppsala, Mexico, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

David Zylbersztajn

Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from PUC-RJ and PhD in Energy from the University of Grenoble (France). Partner and Director of DZ Negócios com Energia. Former general manager of the Brazilian National Oil Agency (ANP) 1998 through 2001, State of São Paulo Secretary of Energy 1995 through 1998. Banco do Brasil Board member and Advisory Board member of the Alure Program of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Economic Cooperation. USP professor on leave, coordinated the Inter-departmental Post-Graduate Program on Energy and was Head of the Electrotechnical and Energy Institute (IEE) Post-Graduate Committee.

Eduardo Jorge

Sanitarian doctor of Secretariat of Health of the State of São Paulo, affiliated to the Brazilian political party Partido Verde since 2003. Municipal Secretary of Greenery and the Environment, Co-author of the constitutional legislation of the social security area (social security, assistance and health) and author or co-author of federal laws, such as regulation of family planning and voluntary sterilization; production of generic medicine; social assistance organic law; linking of budget resources to Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) and restriction to the use of amianthus. Another of his projects in process in Congress is the constitutional amendment which suggests the parliamentary regime for Brazil. Former Municipal Secretary of Health for São Paulo City Hall.

Elio Neves

Rural worker since 1971, was Director of the State of São Paulo Agricultural Workers Federation (Fetaesp) 1985 through 1989, and Director of the National Confederation of Agricultural Workers (Contag) 1986 through 1989. Current President of the São Paulo Federation of Rural Workers (Feraesp), since 1989.

Eric Leenson

Member of the Ethos Institute International Advisory Board, Eric Leenson co-founded and is the President and CEO of Progressive Asset Management, Inc. (PAM), one of the pioneering socially responsible brokerages and an innovator of products and services. Leenson has had a lifelong interest in Latin American studies, having lived in Peru, Chile, and Argentina.

Ernst Ligteringen

Chief Executive of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Worked as an executive director of Oxfam International; director of Programme Coordination of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies; and consultant to the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization at the ILO.

Georg Kell

Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, Kell is member of the Ethos Institute International Advisory Board. Following extensive experiences in Africa and Asia as a financial analyst, he began his career at the UN in 1987 in the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in Geneva. In 1990 he joined the UNCTAD New York office, which he headed from 1993 to 1997. In 1997, Kell became responsible for fostering cooperation between the UN and the private sector, serving as a senior officer in the Executive Office of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Ignacio Ramonet

PhD in Semiotics from the École des Hautes Ètudes en Sciences Sociales, in Paris, France, Ramonet was professor of audiovisual communication theory at the University of Paris-VII and editor-in-chief of newspaper Le Monde Diplomatique, in Paris. Currently, he leads the Spanish version of this newspaper. One of the main leaders of the alter-globalization movement, he created the slogan “Another world is possible”. Ramonet was the founder of Attac (Association for the Taxation of Financial Transactions for the Aid of Citizens) and one of the organizers of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre. President of Media Watch Global, an international network of media watch associations, he has authored several books, including The Tyranny of Communication.

Ingrid Bejerman

PhD in Journalist from the McGill University in Montreal, Canada, Bejerman has served as programme coordinator for Gabriel García Márquez's Foundation for Journalists in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, and has directed the Julio Cortázar Chair, presided by Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez and based in the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. She is a lecturer in the Journalism Department at Concordia University, also in Montreal, and has served on the jury in Canada’s National Newspaper Awards. Bejerman is a freelance journalist and collaborates with literary festivals in Latin America, including the Feria Internacional del Libro in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the Blue Metropolis, Montreal's international literary festival.

Jane Nelson

Senior Fellow and Director of the CSR Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School, Director at the Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF), and non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Jane Nelson also teaches at the Cambridge University’s ‘Business and Poverty’ leadership program and is member of the Ethos Institute International Advisory Board. Jane has authored four books and over 50 other publications on public-private partnerships and corporate responsibility and four of the World Economic Forum's Global Corporate Citizenship reports.

John Elkington

SustainAbility Co-founder & Chief Entrepreneur, John Elkington is a world authority on corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. John has authored or co-authored 17 books, including 1988’s million-selling Green Consumer Guide and Cannibals with Forks: The Triple Bottom Line of 21st Century Business (1997). Its latest work – The Power of Unreasonable People: How Entrepreneurs Create Markets and Change the World, about social entrepreneurs and co-written with Pamela Hartigan from the Schwab Foundation, was launched in February 2008.

Julio Barbosa de Aquino

Founder of the National Council of Rubber Tappers (CNS), he is one of the conceivers of the extractive reserve concept and articulator and first president of the Amazonian Workgroup (GTA). Has held office as Xapuri (state of Acre) mayor for two tenures (1997-2004), having received twice the Sebrae Entrepreneur Mayor Award, in recognition of employment generation for the youth by using the forest as a sustainability mechanism. Has devised the agreement that originated the Alto Acre Citizenship Territory and co-created the MAP Initiative for the development of the region comprising the Peruvian State of Madre de Diós, the Brazilian State of Acre and the Bolivian State of Pando.

Kaarin Taipale

Chair of the UN Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Buildings and Construction, she is Senior Visiting Fellow at CKIR / Helsinki School of Economics in Finland. Member of the World Future Council and Editor of the Finnish Architectural Review, Taipale is also CEO of the Building Department of Helsinki and Chair of ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability.

Laura Valente Macedo

Architect, MSc at the Environmental Science Graduate Program of the University of São Paulo and MSc at the Environmental Change Unit of the University of Oxford, Macedo is the regional director of ICLEI’s Latin America and the Caribbean Secretariat - LACS, and the campaign coordinator of "Cities for Climate Protection - CCP," in the South Cone. She was Coordinator of the Brazilian Climate Change Forum and participated as coordinator or editor in several publications, among which Mudanças Climáticas e Desenvolvimento Limpo – Oportunidades para Governos Locais, 2005, and Guia de Compras Públicas Sustentáveis: Uso do Poder de Compra do Governo para a Promoção do Desenvolvimento Sustentável, 2006 (a sustainable procurement guide).

Luiz Henrique Ceotto

Civil engineer from UnB – University of Brasília, with a Master’s Degree in engineering of structures from the University of São Paulo (USP) São Carlos Engineering School, Ceotto is design and construction director at Tishman Speyer Properties. He is also member of the quality and technology committee at Sinduscon-SP (São Paulo State Construction Industry Association), member of the advisory board of Construção magazine, published by Editora Pini, and guest professor at the USP Polytechnic School master’s degree program in construction engineering.

Marco Antonio Saidel

Professor at the University of São Paulo Polytechnic School (POLI-USP) with a PhD in electrical engineering, Saidel works in the areas of efficient energy management & use and energy planning. He has participated in several research projects at public and private entities. Saidel is also coordinator of pureusp – Program of Efficient Energy Use at USP and coordinator of the Energy Group at the Energy and Electric Automation Engineering Dept - University of São Paulo Polytechnic School (GEPEA/EPUSP).

Maria Cristina Nascimento

Psychologist and businesswoman in the Human Resources area, Nascimento was president of the national association of outsourced service providers, participated in PNBE (National Thought of the Business Bases) and in the creation of the Ethos Institute, of which Board of Directors she is a member. In the last few years, Nascimento has worked on outsourcing projects focused on new paradigms of labor organization.

Philosopher, with Master’s and PhD degrees in Education from PUC-SP, where he has been a full professor since 1977 at the Theology and Religious Sciences Department and at the post-graduate program in the Education Department. He is also a guest professor at the Dom Cabral Foundation and FGV-SP GVpec. He was the São Paulo City Secretary of Education (1991-1992) and wrote, among other books, Qual é a Tua Obra? – Inquietações Propositivas sobre Gestão, Liderança e Ética (2007).

Aagribusiness consultant for the Federation of Industrial Companies of the State of Paraná (Fiep) and Manager of the Organics Brasil Project, fostered by the Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), in partnership with the Development Promotion Institute (IPD).

Nelson Cabral de Carvalho

Mechanical engineer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), with a Master’s degree in environment from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF) and courses in Brazil and abroad on maintenance, quality, strategic planning, organization, human resources, safety, environment and health, Cabral is Safety, Environment and Health manager at Petrobras and leading integrated management systems auditor. Professor at the maintenance engineering postgraduate program of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and at the production and maintenance management postgraduate program of UFF, he has authored the book Gestão Estratégica e Avaliação do Desempenho da Manutenção.

André Maggi Group’s Environment Manager. Animal scientist graduated from the Uberaba College of Animal Science (state of Minas Gerais). Villela is also vice-president to the Responsible Soybean Roundtable and counselor to NGO Aliança da Terra (Land Alliance).

Oded Grajew

Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Ethos Institute – Business and Social Responsibility and UniEthos – Education on Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development. Participant in the Our São Paulo Movement. Board member of the Akatu Institute for Conscious Consumption and founder of the National Thought of the Business Bases (PNBE). Orlando Lima

Civil engineer from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), with a master’s degree in finance from the Brazilian Institute of Capital Market (IBMEC) and several specialization courses abroad, Lima is director of Vale do Rio Doce’s Sustainable Development Department and member of the Vale Foundation’s Board of Trustees. He was partner at Andersen Consulting (currently Accenture) for 17 years, having specialized in change processes in large oil, chemical and petrochemical companies, and led projects, both in Brazil and abroad, of accounting processes and systems implementation and economic-financial performance management. Lima also worked for private equity funds in business acquisition processes, and participated in projects to invigorate large urban centers, together with international consultants.

Oscar Motomura

Graduated in Business Administration from FGV-SP with a Master’s degree in Social Psychology from USP. Founder and CEO of the Amana-Key Group, specialized in educating, updating and preparing executives to hold top business positions and whose aim is to set the standard for radical innovation in management capable of producing genuine evolution in people, organizations, communities, and the planet.

Formerly a Professor at the Federal University of São Carlos, planning and management consultant, Director of the consultancy firm Oficina Consultores Ltda., Chairman of the Board and Director-President of the state-owned tourism company Anhembi Turismo e Eventos da Cidade de São Paulo. Paulo Nassar

With a B.A. in Journalism from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), Nassar has Master’s and PhD degrees in Communication Sciences – public relations from the University of São Paulo School of Communication and Arts (ECA-USP). He has authored several books on communication, including A Comunicação da Pequena Empresa and Relações Públicas na Construção da Responsabilidade Histórica e no Resgate da Memória Institucional das Organizações, organized many publications, and published over two hundred essays, articles and book chapters

Pollyana Ferrari

PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of São Paulo School of Communication and Arts (ECA-USP), Ferrari has worked for 20 years in the IT editorial market, having devoted the last 12 years to the Internet, simultaneously holding the positions of content director at Mandic, portal director at Ig, and director at the Editora Globo Online. She is a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) graduate (journalism and multimedia) and post-graduate program (Cogeae), and also teaches at the Brazilian Association of Business Communication (Aberje). Ferrari is the author of the books Jornalismo Digital and Hipertexto, Hipermídia.

Ray Anderson

Founder of Interface, Inc., Ray was named one of TIME Magazine's 2007 Heroes of the Environment. After reading Paul Hawken's "The Ecology of Commerce", when seeking inspiration for a speech on the company's environmental vision, he started a dramatic turnaround in his organization. His book, "Mid-Course Correction," chronicles the journey. Thirteen years and a sea change later, Interface is approximately 40 per cent to its "Mission Zero" goal. Ray was co-chairman of the US President's Council on Sustainable Development and he's a sought after speaker and advisor on all issues eco.

Ricardo Henriques

Professor at the UFF (Fluminense Federal University) Department of Economics and advisor to the president of BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank), Henriques was responsible for the Ministry of Education’s Secretariat of Continuing Education, Literacy and Diversity (SECAD) and was executive‑secretary of the Ministry of Social Assistance and Promotion. In 2007, he chaired the Education Commission of the 34th General Conference of UNESCO. Henriques’s research activities are focused on social economics with emphasis on inequality, poverty, education, labor market, income distribution, social assistance, environment, design and assessment of social policy, racism, third sector, sustainability and distributive justice.

Ricardo Young

Businessman, degree in Business Administration from Fundação Getúlio Vargas, São Paulo, post-graduation degree in General Management from PDG/EXEC and fellow of the ELIAS program at MIT, Chairman of the Board of Yázigi Internexus; founder and Chairman for three terms of the Associação Brasileira de Franquias (ABF).former general coordinator at PNBE and World Business Academy, Member of the Counsil for Economic and Social Development to the President of Brazil until 2006, President of Instituto Ethos de Empresas e Responsabilidade Social and UniEthos; member of the Board Member of Instituto Akatu, WWF, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), AccountAbility, (London). Member of the CSR Zurich Group. Co-author of several books and articles on corporate social responsibility and sustainable development.

Roberto Smeraldi

Journalist, runs the non-profit organization Friends of the Earth – Brazilian Amazon. Author of a number of publications and books on public policy, sustainable development and environment, he regularly writes for the Correio Braziliense newspaper. In 1998, he founded the website www.amazonia.org.br. Member of the National Commission on Social Determinants of Health and the Brazilian Forum on Climate Change. Currently serves on various boards and steering committees including Yale University’s "The Forests Dialogue” and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biofuels. Served as Chairman of the International NGO Steering Committee for the UN Conference on Environment and Development (Rio-92), Chairman of the International Advisory Group (IAG) to the G-7 Pilot Program for Brazilian Rainforests. Acted as senior advisor to various UN agencies and to the World Bank. Received the Henry Ford Prize for Environmental Conservation in 2000.

Roberto Waack

Biologist from the University of São Paulo Institute of Biosciences and MBA in Business Administration from the University of São Paulo School of Economics, Business and Accounting, Waack is owner and director of Amata S.A., a company that manages sustainable timberlands, Chairman of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Board of Directors, and president of the Amazon Certified Forest Producers Association (PFCA). He is also member of the Brazilian Forest Stewardship Council (FSC-Brasil), and sits on the board of the CRIA (Reference Center on Environmental Information) and Ybios, a joint venture among Orsa Florestal, Natura and Centroflora. Waack has authored several articles on corporate governance, strategic management and technology management.

Simon Zadek

Chief Executive of AccountAbility, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Government and Business of Harvard University’s Kennedy School, and a ‘Professor Extraordinaire’ at the University of South Africa’s Centre for Corporate Citizenship, Zadek sits on the International Advisory Board of the Ethos Institute, the Advisory Board of Generation Investment Management, and is a Member of the Clinton-Dalberg Task Force programme effectiveness in leveraging private enterprise for development. In 2003 he was named one of the World Economic Forum’s ‘Global Leaders for Tomorrow’.  He has authored and co-authored numerous publications, including The Civil Corporation, which was honored as the Best Book Social Issues Award 2006.

Titus Brenninkmeijer

Founder of Solgenix LLC, an organization that supports solar energy entrepreneurs in the developed and developing world, Brenninkmeijer is co-founder and member of the Steering Committee of the Redco Alliance, an alliance of twelve solar energy entrepreneurs from Latin America, Africa and Asia. He is also co-founder and board member of the Energy Access Foundation, which funds innovation in clean energy delivery in the developing world. Brenninkmeijer is Member of the International Advisory Board of the Ethos Institute, of the Leadership Committee of the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE ) and of TechnoServe, a non-profit that supports agricultural entrepreneurs in the developing world.

Vanderley John

Civil engineer from Unisinos, with a Master’s Degree from UFRGS – Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, PhD from USP-University of São Paulo and post-doc degree from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden, John is associate professor at USP Polytechnic School and director of the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) Brazilian Civil Construction Committee (CB-02). He is also member of the Brazilian Housing Quality and Productivity Program (PBQP-H) and of the Environmental Council for Civil Construction in the State of São Paulo.
