The 2006 International Conference – Business and Social Responsibility is organized by Ethos Institute of Business and Social Responsibility , with operational coordination by UniEthos - Education for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development, in partnership with Akatu Institute for Conscious Consumption and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
The role of a socially responsible company in a sustainable society
Every day we come across new issues related to the sustainability of our society.
The discussion about the social and environmental impacts of human activities
goes beyond the field of probability analysis and becomes concrete due to frequent
natural disasters, the emergence of new diseases, and growing social turmoil.
There is a sense of urgency. Everyday new alarms ring. The current situation
and trends showed by the indicators of poverty and extreme poverty, inequalities,
injustice and degradation of environmental conditions require fast and deep
changes in the way people and organizations think and act.
The demands for a sustainable society are quickly attracting new followers.
There is an undeniable movement in the national and world economies towards
the introduction of behaviors, techniques and technologies to cause a less negative
social and environmental impact. The conflicts and dilemmas of this process
are being increasingly incorporated into the analysis of business risks and
opportunities. However, it seems that business initiatives are still unable
to keep up with the gravity of problems. It is necessary to expedite the process
of information and knowledge sharing to increase the pace of changes.
It is in this context that the discussion of this conference´s central theme
- “The Role of a Socially Responsible Company in a Sustainable Society”
- becomes so timely.
We will discuss here how the CSR movement can or cannot become a platform where
economic, social and political forces can converge for the construction of sustainable
societies.
Five Plenary sessions, two Roundtables, eight Theme panels, two Management workshops
and some cultural events are scheduled with the objective of increasing reflection
and interaction among the participants.
Plenary sessions: they aim to deepen the CSR movement’s
conceptual milestone and political vision. The discussions seek to thoroughly
identify and examine the contributions, challenges, dilemmas and roles of companies,
government, civil society and citizens in the construction of a sustainable society.
Roundtables: they aim to point out and present dilemmas and multiple
approaches, as well as the economic, social and environmental reality, encouraging
reflections that lead to propositions and convergent actions in order to overcome
challenges and difficulties.
Theme panels: presentation and discussion of lessons learned
from successful experiences in incorporating sustainable and socially responsible
behavior into investment decisions and business management.
Management workshops: sharing experience of social responsibility
implementation in the companies’ management processes through structured
and guided practical exercises.
Cultural attractions: the event will present sustainability-related
cultural activities, celebrating the wealth and diversity of Brazilian cultural
initiatives.
